Goethe-Zentrum Hyderabad, in collaboration with The Indian Institute of Architects (Andhra Pradesh Chapter), is organising an exhibition of drawings titled "Metro Impact: View From The Street", from 15th to 27th April, at the German association's office in Hermitage Complex, Opp. Legislative Assembly.
Hyderabad is soon going to acquire a Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS). This will take the form of a metro rail along 63 kms of the main thoroughfares of our city. Elevated twin rail tracks will rest on massive concrete pillars along the central median of the roads - akin to a masive flyover. there will be stations on that height roughly every kilometer apart.
While the need for an efficient public transport system is beyond question and all the technical homework seems to have been done by the planners, the visual impact bears further discussion. Of particular concern is the impact it will have on the historical precincts, the aesthetic culture and the visual imagery of the city.
How will our city look post-Metro? Is there an alternative? Metro Impact explores these questions through pictures, presentations by experts and panel discussions, and asks if all design options have been exercised before finalising the scheme.
