Carnatic Vocal Music Program By G Sivakami: Events in Hyderabad

REVIEW FOR CARNATIC VOCAL MUSIC PROGRAM...

Kalasagaram is organizing a Carnatic vocal concert on 21st June at the Keyes High School For Girls, Secunderabad, at 6:30pm, as part of its Twin Carnatic Vocal Music programs, the other program having been held at the same venue on 22nd June. Usha Padmanabhan performed on 21st June, and G Sivakami will perform this evening.

G Sivakami (alias Souwya Srinivasan) will be accompanied by Peri Thyagaraju on the violin & Burra Sriram on the mridangam. Sivakami had her initial training in music under her father N Devaraja, a lawyer of Madurai. Later, she came under the tutelege of Ramanathapuram C S Sankarasivam, Prof Ramanathan & Kollegal R Subrahmanyam of Hyderabad. She is currently taking advanced training under the guidance of D Seshachari of the Hyderabad Brothers. She is a Bachelor in Music and a M A in English from the Madurai Kamaraj University.

Sivakami got a gold medal for her bachelors in music, and also won a Tambura prize from Sri Satguru Sangeetha Samajam College of Music, Madurai, in 1978. She is a 'B' High grade artist of AIR/Doordarshan, Hyderabad. She worked as a music teacher at Kanchi Cultural Heitage, Secunderabad, and Kendriya Vidyalaya, Secunderabad. She is currently working as a music teacher in Maharshi Vidya Mandir, Hyderabad.

Sivakami has given several performances, for various organizations such as the Dept of Culture Hyderabad, Kalasagaram, Hyderabad Music Circle, Telugu University and Thyagaraya Gana Sabha. She has also given performances at Hubli, Madurai and Pune, and participated in many Thyagaraja Aradhana and Navarathri festivals.

Kalasagaram is a South-Indian cultural association situated in the East Nehru Nagar of East Marredpally, and has been organising Carnatic music concerts for more than 35 years. The concerts are usually held in the open-air theater of the Keyes High School campus. The singers are generally from outside Hyderabad, usually amateurs and upcoming artistes, and quite competent. Kalasagaram also occasionally stages South-Indian classical dances and Tamil plays.
