The Andhra Pradesh Beach Volleyball Players Club, in association with the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh, is organising the Asian Beach Volleyball Championships for men and women, at the Necklace Road, from 3rd to 6th April. 20 men's teams and 18 women's teams from Asia and the Oceania countries are taking part in this tournament.
Teams from China, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Kazhakistan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Iran, besides those from the host nation India, are participating in this tournament. India is fielding 5 teams in the men's and 4 teams in the women's sections.
The teams will be divided into four groups, and the matches will be played in the league format. The top two teams from each group qualify for the knockout phase, the top four from which play in the semifinals, and the winners of which clash in the finals. The winner will be decided through the best-of-three sets format, with each set being of 21 points.
The matches will be played on three specially laid artificial sand courts and under flood lights, beside the Hussain Sagar Lake abutting Necklace Road. The matches start at 2:00pm everyday.
A highly entertaining game, beach volleyball is played on sand courts with two players on each side. The sport was included in the Olympics in 1996, and is quickly gaining popularity all over the world. Brazil and USA are the top teams in the world while China and Thailand are strong competitors in Asia.
