The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation Limited is organising the annual Taramati Music & Dance Festival, from 7th to 9th December, at the Taramati Baradari Culture Complex, Ibrahimbagh, Gandipet Road. The 3-day festival will feature some of the country's top most artistes performing, such as Dr. Ananda Shankar Jayant, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Sultan Khan, Pt. Birju Maharaj and Jagjit Singh.
Tonite, the last day of the festival, ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh will sing some mind soothing ghazals. Jagjit Singh is one of the topmost ghazal singers, born in Ganganagar, Rajasthan. Although his late father wanted him to become a bureaucrat by joining the Indian Administrative Service, he chose the world of music. He learnt music under Pandit Chaganlal Sharma for 2 years in Ganganagar, and later devoted 6 years to learning the Khayal, Thumri and Dhrupad forms of Indian classical music from Ustad Jamaal Khan of the Sainia gharana.
He arrived in Mumbai in 1965 in search of better opportunities as a career musician and singer. His early struggle in the music industry, though not too harsh by his own account, still had its share of trials and tribulations. He lived as a paying guest, and his earlier assignments were singing advertisement jingles or performing at weddings and parties.
He has many music albums to his credit, many of which topped both the ghazal and the general music charts. He has done mostly solo albums, but his numbers with Chitra Singh (his wife) and Lata Mangeshkar are some of the memorable ones. His songs Sarakti Jaye Hai Rukh Se Naqab Aahista Aahista, Aah Ko Chahiye, Baat Niklegi To Door Talak Jayegi and Woh Kagaz Ki Kashti are some of his best. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2003.
The entry is by tickets of Rs. 1,000 / Rs. 500 / Rs. 250 per head per day. Please contact Praveen at 98485-35654 for ticket bookings and further details.
