Dr. P Solomon Raj is presenting an exhibition of paintings called Fiery Wheels, from 16th to 21st September, at the Chitramayee - State Gallery Of Fine Arts. Dr. Solomon is a Christian gospel graphic artist, and will be exhibiting 40 of his works which he has painted over the past ten years. A majority of his art is batik, with some of them being acrylic paints and wood-cut works.
One of the central topics in Dr. Solomon's graphic work is the "Holy Family". However, it's not the stable in Bethlehem but the "Flight To Egypt" that is the subject that he prefers. Joseph and Mary with the child riding on the donkey, The Cup Of Bitterness, Palm Sunday, The Last Supper, Noah's Ark and The Cross are some of his works. Dr. Solomon has pictured all these 40 works into a book, and for each of the art works, he has written a poem based on the title of each painting.
Dr. Solomon was born in 1921 in the Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. His parents were members of the Lutheran Church, and the first convert of the family was his grandfather. He studied teacher training at the Andhra Christian College and theology at the Lutheran Gurukul College. He also did a masters degree in education at the Indiana University, USA, and a doctor's degree on "A Christian Folk Religion In India" from Birmingham.
At the Indiana University he attended some courses in woodblock printing and etching. He learned batik from some of his artist friends in Hyderabad. He has written songs, poems and dramas in Telugu, and has choreographed some dance pieces.
