The DRS International School is organising the CBSE South Zone Inter-Schools Chess Championships, from 20th to 23rd September, at its school's premises in Medchal. 55 teams from 48 schools, representing the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, are participating in this tournament.
Andhra Pradesh will have 30 schools participating, of which 24 are from Hyderabad. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala have 9, 6 and 3 schools respectively participating. Hyderabad being the hub of Indian chess, prominent schools from the city such as Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Swamy Narayan Gurukul, Atomic Energy School and Defence Labs School, besides hosts DRS International School, are considered strong contenders for the top spots.
Matches will be held in the Swiss Format in the Under-14 and Under-19 age categories. Each school team can have a maximum of six players (including two reserves), and can include boys and girls. The time limit for each game will be of 90 minutes for 40 moves, and in case of a draw, a sudden death rule of 30 minutes will be applicable.
The top six teams in each age category will qualify to participate in the CBSE National Chess Championships to be held during the year, in which top teams from all zones participate. Merit certificates and medals will be awarded to the top three teams in each category, while participation certificates will be given to the other teams.
