Sri Chandrasekharendra Sangeeta Educational Society is organising the 8th Annual Festival & Aradhana of Satguru Sri Thyagaraja Swamy at Keyes High School For Girls, from 24th to 28th January. Some of the best artistes of Carnatic music will be performing at the 5-day festival, including O S Thiyagarajan, Nithyasree Mahadevan, Sanjay Subramanyam, S Sashank, Garimella Balakrishna Prasad, Peri Thyagaraju, and many young and upcoming artistes.
Today, the 3rd day, Carnatic vocalist of Hyderabad, R Swarna will perform, supported by O Rajasekhar on the violin and U Kali Varaprasad on the mridangam. Swarna is a child prodigy, who started singing at a very young age of 2 years only. She was born in 1978 and was induced into music in 1980, under late Susarla Sivaram. She gave her first stage performance at the age of three, and now has more than 500 Carnatic and light music concerts all over India. During a short span of only five years (1980-85) with Susarla Sivaram, she learnt more than 150 rare keertanas and tillanas, excluding the renowned Annamayya and Thyagayya keertanas.
Swarna has completed her BA and MA in Music from Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, and is presently pursuing her doctrate in music from Padmavathi Mahila University under researchship of Dwaram Lakshmi. She a B grade artiste of AIR in Carnatic and light music.
She has been conferred with innumerous awards and prizes, including Bala Bharathi Award, The National award from Bhakta Ramadas Government College of Music (Secunderabad), Neraval Award from Krishna Gana Sabha, and titles such as Bala Ratna from Andhra Balananda Sangam and Bala Viswakala Jyothi from Viswakala Parishad. At present, she trains under the Hyderabad Brothers.
Sri Chandrasekharendra Sangeeta Educational Society was founded in 2000, with the objective of imparting and spreading Carnatic vocal music to music lovers of all ages. It was established by S Chandrasekhar, a renowned vocalist, who has a diploma in Carnatic vocal. He teaches about 50 students, both young and old. Every Sunday, he also teaches Annamacharya Keertanas from 3pm to 5pm, free of cost to anyone eager to learn. The society also organises various music concerts of local upcoming and established artistes, and renowned classical musicians from Chennai.
