Very few people above the age of, oh, 10, would not know the rules of chess. And that's all you need, to lock horns here from people across the state. If you cannot win, it will make you want to, and then there's only one way forward - getting better and better.
The Dronacharya Chess Academy is organising the AP State Open Chess Tournament at the Vasavi Club on the 26th & 27th of January. This tournament will be held in the Sicilian format, and will have participants of various ages exhibiting their mind-power. There is no age limit and there are no age groups for this tournament, which means that a junior participant can take on a senior participant.
The registration fee is Rs. 250 per head, and the entries close on 25th January. The arbitrators of the tournament will decide on the draws and reserve all the rights. The player will be judged on his/her win-loss ratio rather than on the system of points. Each participant has to play a total of 7 or 9 rounds, depending on the entries.
The total prize-money is worth Rs. 17,000, with the winner getting to pocket Rs. 3,000 in cash, besides the trophy. Cash prizes will also be given away to 20 other players based on their respective performances in the tourney.
The Dronacharya Chess Academy was established 2-1/2 years ago to coach aspiring chess players and organise tournaments to recognize them. It is affiliated to the All-India Chess Federation.
