At the very least, Kollegal Subramanyam increases the average number of titles per person in the world. At his best, he makes you inarticulate. Like he will tonite.
Sangeeta Ksheerasagaram, in association with Sri Thyagaraja Gana Sabha, as part of the Uppalapati Ankaiah Memorial Concerts, is organising a Carnatic vocal concert by Mahamahopadyaya Kollegal R Subramanyam, on 17th October at Kala Subbarao Kala Vedika, the mini-hall at Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha. He will be accompanied by B Janaki Ramana on the violin, G Ramachandram on the mridangam, T P Bala Subramanyam on the ghatam and P Srinivas Gopalan on the morsing.
Kollegal R Subramanyam started learning music initially from S Bala Krishna Iyenger, at Kollegal, Karnataka. Then, from 1946 to 1952, he trained under Velakavadi Varadharaj Iyenger, under the Gurukul system. He established Sri Thyagaraja Temple in Vidya Nagar, Hyderabad, in 1968, where, every year, there is a celebration in memory of Sri Thyagaraja.
He has won many titles: to name some - Sri Vidya Upasaka, Nadha Bramha Kala Ratnam, Sangeeta Atma Vedi, Sangeeta Sudhakara, Sangeeta Sudhasagara, Tatva Swara Sekhara, Kala Vipanchi, Sangeeta Mahamahopadyaya and Sangeeta Vidya Ratna.
He has written over 500 kritis in Sanskrit, Kanaris, Tamil, Malyalam and Hindi. He has written Lalita Nava Varna kritis, Sri Sankara Vijayam, Upaghana raga Thyagaraja Pancharatna stuthi mala, kritis on Sringeri Sarada Devi, Basara Pancharatna on Basara Saraswati Devi, Nava Graha kritis, 72 Melakarta ragas, kritis on Nava Durga and Gayatri, and also a book called Naga Upasana Sri Vidya, published by Sri Vidya Peetham in New York, USA.
