Two sisters. Both A-grade artists of the AIR. Both in the violin and in vocals. Both winners of the AIR National Competitions. Both in town. Only once.
Kalasagaram, on the occasion of its 39th Annual Cultural Festival Of Music, Dance And Drama from 24th November to 3rd December, is organising a vocal duet recital by B Rajani and B Gayathri today, the 5th day, at Bhagyalakshmi Kalabhavan in the Keyes Girls' High School. The duo will be supported by B U Ganesh Prasad on the violin, K Arun Prakash on the mridangam and Trichy K Murali on the ghatam.
Rajani and Gayathri are among the rare few who have achieved enduring success in both violin and vocal music. After more than a decade as successful violinists of high caliber, the sisters' foray into vocal music has brought them instant recognition and wide acclaim. They are endowed with strong voices, and with a striking style of their own, have won the hearts of the connoisseurs.
The sisters had their initial training in vocal music from their mother, Meenakshi Balasubramaniam, and thereon from Sangeetha Bhooshanam Prof T S Krishnaswamy for the violin, at the Shanmukhananda Sangeetha Vidyalaya in Mumbai, and by Sangeetha Kala Acharya P S Narayanaswamy for vocals. They have the rare distinction of being graded A in both violin and vocal by the AIR, and are winners of first prize in the AIR National Competitions.
