For all those who feel that it is Ghantasala that hogs all the limelight in all the "in memory of" shows organized by the various cultural organizations in town, this is going to be one welcome break. It is the Manasu Kavi this time that is being commemorated. And there's a 1-1/2 hour musical show of his songs performed live, called Old Melodies, as part of this event. (And if it is old memories of Athreya being sung, then who'll have been the original playbacker? See, sometimes you just don't win!)
Raagasapthaswaram, the 4-year-old cultural organization organizing programs in music, dance and film appreciation and giving away more than a few gold medals every year, is awarding the 5th Athreya gold medal, given to contemporaries of Athreya in films and poetry. And adding to the list of recipients like Dr C Narayana Reddy, Dr A Nageswara Rao, V Madhusudhana Rao and D Madhusudhana Rao is Dr M S Reddy of Sabdalaya, known popularly as Mallemala. The 75-year-old poet and producer of such films as Ankusam, Ramayana (the popular all-kids version) and Rama Baanam was also the chairman of the APFDC in the early 90s.
