There's one place in town where it's not stalwarts of Indian classical performing tonite. It's stalwarts nevertheless.
The NALSAR University of Law is organising a nite of rock by the talented Pakistani Rock Band Jal, at its university campus at Shamirpet, on 1st of October.
The opening act will be performed by one of the emerging bands of Mumbai called Prayag. The band comprises of Swapnil, the bassist with classical rock influences; Pranab, the lead vocalist; Veeru, the drum prodigy; Sumeet, a jazz-rock and blues enthusiast; and Naveen, the youngest member of the troupe.
The music of Prayag combines elements of jazz, blues, rock and heavy metal. Raaste, Itefaq and Shanti are their most popular songs. Despite their youth and novelty, Prayag have in a short time made a name for themselves in the Indian rock circuit.
The performance of Jal is slated for next. Jal, a young and contemporary Pakistani band that combines Urdu vocals with modern rock, is a rage among Asians. The 3-member band consists of Farhan Saeed, the vocalist, Amir Sheraz, the jazz-inspired bassist and Goher Mumtaz, the vocalist, guitarist, lyricist and the composer.
Their debut album Aadat, released in 2003, stayed on top of the chart for 6 months on Pakistani television. Woh Lamhe and Dil Haray broke most music records in Pakistan. Their most recent release, Ek Din Ayega, was declared the second best video among the top 100 videos of their country's music charts. Jal was also voted as the Best Rock Band in Pakistan at both the MTV Asia Awards and IM Awards 2006.
