Chaitanya Art Theatres is presenting Andhra Natyam By Kala Krishna & his disciples, on 7th November, at the Ravindra Bharathi auditorium. The dance recital is being presented on the occasion of completion of 30 years in the field of Andhra Natyam by Kala Krishna.
The evening starts with a Perini Natyam by Prakash, Venkat, Ravi Teja, Srikanth and Ranjit, followed by Pushpanjali and Shiva Kaivaram by Vineela, Keertana, Satvika, Swati and Sweta, and a Nava Janardhana Parijatam by Kala Krishna. The orchestra for the recital is by Perini Prakash and Sharada Reddy with the nattuvangam and vocal respectively, Balarama Murthy on the mridangam, Subbalakshmi on the violin and Dattatreya on the flute.
Andhra Natyam, originally called the Lasya Nartana, was practised only by temple dancers. It is as old as the people of Andhra. This dance form was revived by Dr Nataraja Ramakrishna. Kala Krishna is engaged in the revival of both Perini and Andhra Natyam from extinctiion, and is now teaching them to about 60 students.
Kala Krishna is the beloved disciple of Padmasree Bharatakalaprapoorna Dr. Nataraja Ramakrishna. He is the only artiste today in the whole of Andhra Pradesh who knows and performs the complete nine nights story of Navajanardanam concised to seven nights performance. He is a very popular dance artiste of Andhra Natyam tradition.
He has performed all over the country and the world. He led a dance troupe to African Nations and performed in cities like Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Lilonque and Zimbabwe, under the Cultural Exchange Program of ICCR. He also visited USA in 1991, under the sponsorship of Telugu Fine Arts Society, New York and gave performances before an applauded and delighted audience.
He was awarded the Abhinaya Satya Bhama title by well known scholar Vemparala Suryanarayana Sastry, and Madhura Lasya Kala Nidhi by Sangeetha Vidwa Sabha of Kakinada. His Navajanardanam, which was documented by a Private Organisation won Nandi Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 1988.
