Chitramayee - State Gallery Of Fine Arts is organising an exhibition of paintings by Chelian, from 6th to 11th November. The display consists of more than 30 figurative paintings.
D Nedunchelian is a Chennai-based artist known for a scratchy techinique and acrylic works. He treats painting as a performing art. He has created cross-media work, including illustrations for stories and poetry, as well as stage-painting accompanied by music. The rhythm of percussion is all he needs to move his brush or fingers along the canvas, creating images according to the beats. Most of the paintings born in this genre are simply paints splashed on canvas and later scraped into images.
Chelian is a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the Government College of Arts & Crafts, Kumbakonam. He has conducted 24 one-man shows and more than 50 group shows, and has participated in many artists' camps and workshops. He has been interviewed on a number of occasions on television in India, and has published three books on painting and sculpture. He also regularly writes art reviews in leading magazines in India.
Chelian has received several awards, including the prestigious Camlin South Zone Award in the senior category, the All-India Art Exhibition Award of the Chitrakala Niketan of Andhra Pradesh, and the titles of Kalai Gnayiru from Thiruvalluvar Elakiya Mandram, Chennai, and Thoorigai Thoothuvan from Vasal Illakiya Mandram, Chennai.
