Beauty lived happily ever after with her Beast, but not if Fellini had his way - catch his version of the story, tonite.
Zampano is a cruel, traveling carnival owner who buys Gelsomnia for an assistant from her poverty-stricken family. Gelsomnia does Zampano's bidding without question or resistance, though she is abused and man-handled by him. Yet, she remains faithful and uncomplaining.
The two join a circus and meet Matto, an acrobat whose acts fascinate Gelsomina. In a jealous rage Zampano fights Matto and accidentally kills him. Gelsomina goes mad with grief and Zampano leaves her. Years later, when he hears of the girl's death, Zampano is overwhelmed by the emptiness inside him, and finally ends up breaking down, with tears of bitter loneliness in his eyes.
