The Department Of Culture, is organizing a year long Surabhi Theater Festival at Lailitha Kala Thoranam to celebrate the 120th birth anniversary of Surabhi – a theater art form which began in 1885 in Surabhi village in Cuddapah district. This festival is being organized to revive the theater art form of Surabhi, which is losing its prominence in modern times due to the lack of financial assistance and opportunities to showcase the talents of its members.
Five associations now survive in the whole world that carry on the tradition of Surabhi, where every artist is born on the stage and dies on the stage. These five teams will perform mythological and social plays during the festival, which include Srikrishna Leelalu, Lavakusha, Balanagamma, Sri Brhammam Gari Charitra, Maya Bazar, Bhukailash, Bhaktha Prahalada, Sita Kalyanam and a social play Kanaka Tara.
The entry fee is Rs. 10 – Rs. 15, and the plays will be staged on all the days except Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For further details, please contact 5550-2467.
