Vamsee Art Theatres International, together with Aradhana, is presenting the Dr. Akkineni Golden Bracelet for the year 2007 to the renowned Kuchipudi dancer Dr. Alekhya Punjla, on 21st September, at the Ravindra Bharathi auditorium. The award carries with it a citation, shawl and gold bracelet (bangaru kankanam).
The chief guest for the awards nite is Dadasaheb Phalke Award and Padmabhushan winner Dr. Akkineni Nageshwara Rao. The other dignitary guests are Dr. Sobha Naidu, Kuchipudi dancer; Saripally Kondala Rao, President of Dr. Akkineni Nataka Kala Parishad; Vijay Babu, senior journalist; Dr. K Ravi, industrialist; and Pavuluri Sivaramayya, writer.
Alekhya is one of the foremost as well as top-ranking exponents in both Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam. Apart from numerous awards, titles and praises bestowed upon her, she is a recipient of the prestigious Ugadi Visisht Puraskar and the Hamsa Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
Alekhya learnt dance at a young age under the tutelage of late Dayal Sharan, and later continued under Dr. Uma Rama Rao. She has performed at the highest level in India and abroad, including at all the prestigious dance festivals of the country like the Haridas Samaroh, Kalidas Samaroh and Kuchipudi Mahotsav, and the Kalakshetra, Siddendra Yogi, Nishagandhi, Khajuraho and Konark dance festivals. She choreographed and brought to life several dance ballets, and through them, Alamelu Manga, Gouri, Parvathi, Rukmini, Satyabhama, Thilla Kali, Mandakini Durga, Sashirekha, Andal, Draupadi and Radha.
