You'll be told this is a film for kids. If you'd sell a falcon egg for $10,000, then it's for you, too.
Saptaparni, in association with The Moving Images and Goethe-Zentrum (German Centre), is screening an unforgetable children's film, Summer Of The Falcon, on 17th December, at Saptaparni on Road No. 8, Banjara Hills, at 5:30PM.
This 104-minute German film with English subtitles is open to all. Ashish Pittie of the Bird Watchers Society will introduce the film to the audience.
The story is a about a young girl called Marie, who has a great capacity for courage and compassion. She is a child of nature, used to the steep climbs and rocky crevasses of her beautiful mountain home in the German Alps. It is also the home of falcons, which are highly sought after as hunting birds and are a status symbol in the Arab world. People pay lots of money to get one of these prized and fearless birds.
Marie's friendship with a female falcon, and the way she protects her friend and its nest of eggs, and carefully makes it trust her and answer her call, is one of the extraordinary things about this unforgettable film.
But this idyllic setting is also a tourist attraction. A party of hang gliders from the city arrives at the local hotel. Rick and his father are part of the team, and Rick's father keeps pushing him to prove himself by becoming an expert glider. Instead Rick makes friends with Marie and roams the mountain side happily.
But storm clouds are gathering to threaten Marie's peace. This film is about the lure of big money and irresponsible tourism that can ruin the natural balance of a beautiful unspoilt landscape like the one Marie's community lives in and nurtures.
Marek, a man pretending to be a wildlife photographer, represents the greed and callousness of human beings towards the environment. Marek intends to steal Marie's falcon's eggs, which he can sell for a princely 10,000 dollars apiece. But he has reckoned without Marie's fierce loyalty and her tenacity to love and protect her space.
Summer Of The Falcon is a thrilling adventure about a brave young girl who succeeds in saving falcons, and finds a new friend - Ricky. Marie's courage inspires Ricky to at last learn to fly (like a falcon). Marek, after an exciting chase, ends up in jail as he deserves.
This is a film for adult and child alike - anyone in fact who cares for our wonderful planet and its fabulous wildlife. For further details, please contact Sunita at 6666-7707 or 6682-1789.
