He stresses that he is glad he did not go to an art school. We don't know if that is something you should seek to emulate, but everything else is.
Kalakriti Art Gallery is presenting an exhibition of paintings and sculpture by Jehangir Jani, from 11th to 20th December. 17 recent works of the artist will be on display.
An accountant by profession and a self-taught artist, Jehangir Jani took up art full-time when he was 33. His style is not governed or restricted by any school of thought, but by his own inspiration. Also, he shies away from labels, stressing that he is glad he did not go to an art school.
He does solo exhibitions once in 2 years, and this is the first time that he is exhibiting in the city. Even though the current exhibition is based on water colors on paper and oil on canvas, he likes to work with different media like sculpture, ceramics, latex, fibreglass and sheet metal.
He has exhibited his works at various prestigious art galleries in Mumbai like Gallery Chemould, National Gallery of Modern Art, Jehangir Art Gallery, Bajaj Art Gallery, Arressa Art Gallery, Guild Art Gallery, and Sans Tache Art Gallery, in addition to galleries at Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore. This is his travelling show, which has come from Delhi, and will go to Baroda and finally Mumbai.
Jani has also conducted workshops in terracotta. His most recent exhibition was of works in fibreglass and sheet metal, evocatively titled Stories.
