It's raining Telugu dramas in town for 29 days, and today it's the turn of a previous avatar of George Bush - Bhasmasura. Let's hope Nancy is his Mohini.
On the occasion of its 29th anniversary, Kinnera Art Theatres is organising 29 days of Telugu stage dramas from different parts of the state, at Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha, from 9th November to 7th December. As part of 20th day of the celebrations, Mohini Bhasmasura is being staged today.
Mohini Bhasmasura is a story of how Vishnu attains the form of a lady called Mohini to get rid Lord Shiva of an asura called Bhasmasura. Ambitious to rule the world and to be the most powerful on earth, the asura, through devoted meditation and penance, wins the benevolence of Lord Shiva, who appears before him and grants him to ask for a boon.
Bhasmasura asks that he be granted the power that anyone whose head he touched with his hand would immediately fall dead. Shiva obliges. At this, Bhasmasura wants to test the effect on the Lord himself. Shiva, upon learning of the asura's intentions, runs for his life. Vishnu, on coming to know of this, appears as the ravishing beauty Mohini and diverts Bhasmasura from his pursuit of Siva.
Captivated by her beauty, he expresses his desire to possess her. Mohini agrees, but with the condition that he has to dance exactly as she dances. He agrees and imitates her every step. In the course of the dance, he puts his hand on his own head and is burnt.
The play is being directed by K R K Sastry and presented by Swarna Bharathi Kala Parishat of Krishna district. The entry to this play is free.
