On the occasion of the 60th Independence Day, Shilparamam is presenting a Kuchipudi dance recital by the students of Mahati Kala Samithi. Starting with some warm-up numbers such as Neela Megha Shareera and Dashavataram, the evening will be followed by a dance ballet Jaati Velugulu.
Jaati Velugulu is 45-minute Kuchipudi ballet in which 30 dancers enact national personalities from Bankim Chandra Chatterjee (national song writer) to Rabindranath Tagore (national anthem writer). In between, 19 other personalities like Annamacharya, Thyagaraja, Adibatla Narayana Das, Dadabhai Nauroji, Chandrashekar Azad, Bhagat Singh, Subash Chandra Bose, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi will be portrayed on stage.
The students participating in the ballet are all disciples of Sridevi at Mahati Kala Samithi. The ballet is choreographed and designed by Sridevi, with Susarla Sarma on the mridangam, Prakash on the keyboard, Indira Srinivas with the vocals and Sridevi with nattuvangam providing support.
Mahati Kala Samithi was established at Vanasthalipuram, in 1988, by Sridevi. A gold medalist in MA (Kuchipudi) from Pottisreeramulu Telugu University, Sridevi has also completed a diploma in Bharatanatyam. She was a disciple of Dr. Uma Rama Rao for 10 years. She has performed at various places in India. Through her institution, she teaches only Kuchipudi to about 50 students.
