What is Batik painting, you may ask. For the uninitiated, Batik painting is what Balaiah does. Yes, the man has single-handedly made the medium popular, and it's all on diaplay this week.
Lakshana Art Gallery is organising an exhibition of drawings and paintings by Yasala Balaiah, a National Award winner. Balaiah is an established senior artist born in 1939, and is Hyderabad-based. After completing his M A & B Ed in drawing and painting in 1962, he took up a job as an art teacher. An expert at Batik painting, he earned himself the nickname Batik Balaiah, fascinating people all over the world with his dexterous experiments in this medium.
A native of Telangana, Balaiah is known for his delightful paintings of Telangana women, drawn from the beautiful rural backdrop. His colorful paintings of brightly-attired, dark-complexioned, straight-nosed and strong-boned Telangana women brings a refreshing whiff of rural splendor.
Balaiah has now retired from his job as a teacher, and has devoted himself to working at his art full-time. He has participated in many solos and group shows, and at artist camps, and has received many awards since 1962.
