And so, Dastkar Andhra is organising the Sankranti Mela, an exhibition-cum-sale of handicrafts and handlooms, from 4th to 7th January, at the YMCA Hall, Secunderabad. The exhibition houses about 16 stalls featuring artisans from various states of the country displaying their works:
Kondapalli toys
Textiles from Narayanpet, AP
Terracotta jewelry from Chigguru, Karnataka
Block prints from Bhuj, Gujarat
Kalahasti Kalamkari paintings
Thread and bead work from Rajasthan
Terracota and brass jewelry from UP
Woollen shawls from Kashmir
Leather and wood work from Rajasthan
Leather and jute bags from West Bengal
Warangal dhurries and Ikkat bedspreads
Dastkar Andhra is a non-profit registered organization working on natural dyeing, design, technology development, policy, research and advocacy on behalf of the handloom industry. Its marketing wing Dastkar Andhra Marketing Association supports the weaving societies in their marketing efforts, which in turn are catered to by its design studio, which assists the weavers in retaining their unique identity alongside conforming to the changing market trends.
The entry to the exhibition is free, and is open from 10:30am to 8:00pm, with no lunch break. Please contact 6631-1577 for further details.
