Saptaswara Cultural Organization is organising the Dakshina Bharatiya Sangeeta Navaratrotsavamulu from 2nd to 10th November, at the Kala Subbarao Kala Vedika, the mini-hall of Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha. The nine-day festival has two music concerts daily, featuring special kritis of the Music Trinity (Thyagaraja, Muthuswamy Dikshitar and Syama Sastry), specially Dikshitar's Navagraha and Navavarna kritis.
Today, the sixth day of the festival, Vizianagaram D Vardhani will be performing a Carnatic vocal recital, the first recital for the day, starting at 6:15pm. Vardhani is a senior disciple of P V Seshayya Sastry in Vizianagaram, and learnt under him in the gurukula system for 16 years. She has done M A in Music from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam.
Vardhini has performed at various cities, including Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad. She has been conferred upon many titles, such as Gaana Kokila and Madhura Kokila.
The event is organised by Saptaswara, a cultural organization founded by K S R Balakrishna Sastry. He is a retired head-master who has also performed as an artiste on radio and TV, from 1952 to 2005. A disciple of Dr. M Balamurali Krishna, he has performed a number of times with him.
