What do you call a person who gave her first stage performance in 1981? Okay, let's refine that question - suppose this person was born in 1978? The awards have called her everything.
Sangeeta Ksheerasagaram, in association with Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha, and in memory of late Uppalapati Ankaiah, is organising a Carnatic vocal recital by Rayaprolu Swarna on 21st January at Kala Subbarao Kala Vedika, the mini-hall of Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha in Chikkadpally. She will be supported by N C Anantakrishna on the violin and A Srinivas Rao on the mridangam.
Swarna is a child prodigy, who started singing at a very young age of just 2 years. She was born in 1978 and was induced into music in 1980, under late Susarla Sivaram. She gave her first stage performance at the age of 3, and now has more than 500 Carnatic and light music concerts all over India. During a short span of only 5 years (1980-85) with Susarla Sivaram, she learnt more than 150 rare keertanas and tillanas, excluding the renowned Annamayya and Thyagayya keertanas.
Swarna has completed her BA and MA in Music from Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, and is currently pursuing her doctorate in music from Padmavathi Mahila University under the researchship of Dwaram Lakshmi. She is a B-grade artiste of the AIR in Carnatic and light music.
She has been conferred upon numerous awards and prizes, including the Bala Bharathi Award, the National award from the Bhakta Ramadas Government College of Music (Secunderabad), the Neraval Award from the Krishna Gana Sabha, and titles such as Bala Ratna from Andhra Balananda Sangam and Bala Viswakala Jyothi from Viswakala Parishad.
She is also a recipient of the CCRT scholarship for 12 years and the HRD scholarship for 2 years. At present, she is training under the famed Hyderabad Brothers, D Raghavachari and D Seshachari, and has founded a cultural association called Suswara Academy of Performing Arts, through which she organises musical nites and light music programs.
