The Sharada Cultural Trust is presenting its 18th Annual Cultural Festival and 161st Aradhana of Satguru Saint Thyagaraja Swamy, from 26th January to 3rd February, at the Keyes High School for Girls, Secunderabad. The 9-day festival will feature music concerts daily at 6:30pm by many renowned musicians such as R Santanagopalan, Kumaresh & Ganesh, the Chinmaya Sisters, Pantula Rama, Rajani & Gayathri, S P Ram and R Suryaprakash.
Today, the 7th day, Carnatic vocalist R Suryaprakash will be performing. He will be accompanied by Sherkali Shivakumar on the violin and P Jaya Bhaskar on the mridangam.
A popular young vocalist in the field of Carnatic music today, R Suryaprakash is the disciple of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Padma Bhushan T V Sankaranarayanan, and hence a product of the Great Madurai Mani Iyer baani. He has also been shaped by stalwarts such as Dr. V V Srivatsa and Sulochana Pattabhiraman.
Endowed with a vibrant and mellifluous voice, he has acquired a vast repertoire and scintillating manodharma through relentless sadhana, and thus earned praise from connoisseurs and critics alike. Surya has a rich concert experience of over a decade, in which he has toured and performed all over India, and also USA, Australia, Malaysia and Singapore. Also a teacher greatly sought after, he has conducted workshops and lecture-concerts in India and abroad.
Suryaprakash has been conferred upon several awards and titles such as Best Vocalist by Sri Krishna Gana Sabha in 1991, the Indian Fine Arts Society in 1995 and the Music Academy in 2004, the Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer Prize for Best Raga Alapana by Sri Krishna Gana Sabha in 1996, Yuva Kala Bharathi by Bharat Kalachar in 1999, the Youth Excellence Award by the Rotary Club of Madras West in 2004, and titles of Madhura Gana Tilaka by Indian Arts Academy, Melbourne in 2003, Nadachudar by Nadabrahmam in 2003, and Gambhira Gana Siromani by ABC(Thamizh), Sydney, in 2005.
