This is a movie about the relationship between a mother and her mentally-retarded daughter. It has brought together two of the best Swedish talents, Ingrid Bergman and Liv Uller, for the first and the final time.
This is a story about Charlotte. She is a world famous pianist who decides to visit her daughter, Eva (Liv Ullmam) afer a prolonged period of seperation. Once there, she is surprised to find that her other daughter, Helena, is no longer staying at the mental institution where she had placed her, but is now living with Eva.
As the day moves into the night, mother and daughter open their feelings and misgivings towards each other. Before long, Charlotte who had chosen her musical career over her role as a mother, is forced to re-appraise her life and the choices she has made. By the time the night is over, the relationship between these two women undergoes a profound change.
Autumn Sonata has won awards in catergories like the best director, the best actress and the best foreign film, at the National Board Of Review (USA) in 1978; the best foreign film at the Golden Globes in 1979; the best European film at the Bodil Awards 1979; and the best actress award at the National Society Of Film Critics, in the year 1979.
