Shilparamam, as part of the ongoing All-India Crafts Mela, is organising a Kuchipudi dance recital by Devulapalli Uma and group, on 24th December. Uma, along with her group of disciples consisting of Sadhika, Yashaswini, Vaishnavi, Akshara, Pratyusha and Sneha Kriti, will start the recital with a Muthuswamy Dikshitaar kriti Maha Ganapathim, followed by an Annamacharya keertana Chakkani Talliki Chaangubhala, a Lakshmi stuthi Maam Paahi Sri Lakshmi Kamalalay and some Shiva stotras.
The performance will be accompanied by Devullapalli Kameshwari and Prakash Rao on the vocals, Devullapalli Subramanya Sarma and Uma on the nattuvangam, Vamshi Krishna on the flute and Om Prakash on the mridangam.
Uma was born in a family of musicians, and her father Subrahmanya Sarma, mother Kameshwari and even daughter Sneha Kriti are involved with the art at her dance institution Srimukha Kuchipudi Natyalayam that was founded in 2003. Uma learnt dance initially from Dr. Vempati Chinnasatyam, and later on from Dr. Shobha Naidu. She has done her M A in dance, with a gold medal to show for it, from the Hyderabad Central University, under Radheshyam.
She gave her first performance at a very young age of 7, and has given recitals in almost every district in Andhra Pradesh, and almost all over India. In addition she has also performed in Malaysia for which was given a Swarna Birudu (Golden Title). She also has been conferred upon the Kalaratna and the Natya Mayuri titles, and has written a book called Mirror Of Kuchipudi, which was released in July 2006 in the USA.
