The best part of this workshop is the currency that they want you to pay in - your presence. This whole week, an extremely accomplished artiste expounds on the nuances of Carnatic, for free.

The S S Music Academy is organising a workshop of Carnatic vocal music from 15th to 20th May, at its premises in Gandhinagar. The 6-day workshop will be conducted by G V Prabhakar, a renowned classical vocalist and music composer.

During the course of the workshop, Prabhakar will teach some Narayana Theertha tarangams and Ramadas keertanas. There is no specific fee for learning these tarangams and keertanas, and anybody interested can register for any nominal fee they can afford.

Garikipati Venkata Prabhakar is a professional singer, who learnt music under famous gurus like Voleti Venkateswarlu and Nedunuri Krishnamurty. He has performed classical and light music concerts at various sabhas and music festivals all over the world.

As a composer, he has composed music for several Kuchipudi ballets and given vocal support for the dance ballets of renowned dancers like Vempati Chinna Satyam and Dr Shobha Naidu. He anchored the famous music program Kalisi Paadudam of Hyderabad Doordarshan.

S S Music Academy was established in 1997 by G V Prabhakar, a classical singer, composer and graded artiste of the All-India Radio. The academy which was started with one branch and just three students, now has more than 300 students in three branches, at Gandhinagar, Vanasthalipuram and Kondapur. In addition to Carnatic vocal, veena, Kuchipudi, guitar, the keyboard, Hindustani music, light music and Ghantasala songs are the other wings of music that is being taught here.

The academy is affiliated to the Gandharva Mahavidhyalaya in Maharashtra, and also prepares and trains students for music and dance certificate course exams at the Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University.
