It's hard not to know him - living like him is supposed to be the ultimate feat, something even Arjun Singh could not manage. Okay, wrong example. The right one is on stage tonite.
On the occasion of its 29th anniversary, Kinnera Art Theatres is organising 29 days of Telugu stage dramas from different parts of the state, at Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha, from 9th November to 7th December. As part of the 27th day of celebrations, Satya Harischandra is being staged today.
Satya Harishchandra is the story of a king who abdicated his throne and even his family for the sake of truth. Upon a wordy duel with sage Vasishta, Viswamitra once accepts the challenge to make the righteous and honest King Harischandra utter a lie. In one such sticky situation, he corners the king and leaves him with 2 options - either to resort to the immoral act of telling a lie or to leave his throne. The king prefers the latter and leaves the country as well.
As fate starts haunting Harischandra, his son dies of snake bite. Accusing Harischandra's wife Chandramati of child murder, the local king sentences her to death and orders Harischandra, working in a cremation ground, to execute her. The righteous Harischandra obeys the order and attempts to hack his wife. Just when he is about to execute the order, Lord Shiva appears and blesses him by bringing his son back to life and returning his throne.
The play is being directed by V Narayana and is being presented in the form of a mythological play by Sri Mitra Kala Natya Mandali, Mahaboobnagar.
Kinnera Art Theatres was started in 1977 and has since organised various programs, be it musical nites, classical dances or vocals, felicitations or release of books.
