Sangam Academy is organizing a live vocal concert by Dr. Mangalampalli Balamurali Krishna. The entry is by tickets priced at Rs. 2,000, Rs. 500 and Rs. 200 respectively. The proceeds of this show will go to the welfare of the poor and economically backward artists connected to the music domain.
Dr. Mangalampalli Balamurali Krishna, a musical legend of the present times, was born in Andhra Pradesh in 1930, and gave his first concert when he was barely 8. His guru, Parupally Sri Ramakrishnayya Pantulu, was the disciple of Dakshinamoorthy Shastri. By the age of 16, he had published a book of his own compositions in all the 72 Melakartha ragas, with each piece serving as a perfect vehicle to highlight the peculiarities of the raga in which it was composed.
Not content with expressing his genius through the ragas commonly in use, he went on to create new ragas of his own. The most popular of these are Sarvashree (containing only three notes), Mahathi, Manorama, Sushama and Moohanangi. In his compositions, the melody is ingeniously interwoven with the lyrics making most of the musical as well as literary masterpieces. Recognition and acclaim followed wherever Dr. Balamurali Krishna went. Winner of several awards including the Padmasri and the Padma Vibhushan, he has been honoured with doctorates from 5 universities.
Formed in 1995 by Sanjay Kishore, the Sangam Academy has come a long way in being a successful and popular academy supporting many artists and groups. In the past 13 years, the academy has presented numerous cultural events, and has trained many artists in and around the twin cities.
