There are few places in town that offer an MA in dance, and fewer persons still who take it. The fraction that get out, then, do not surprise with their achievements.
Shilparamam, as part of its weekly program of classical dance, is presenting a Kuchipudi dance recital by T Himabindu, on 19th November. Himabindu, along with Kopal, will start the recital with Vinayaka Stuthi, followed by Mama Vasuda Janani, Mahadeva Shamho, Muddugare Yashoda, Tillana, and finally Mangalam.
Himabindu and Kopal both have an MA in dance, from the University of Hyderabad, with Himabindu now pursuing her Ph D. Both teach Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi at their institute, Muvva Nritya Raaga Nigamam in Ameerpet, which was started in 2003.
They trained and are still learning Kuchipudi under Guru Badrinath, who himself was a disciple of Dr Uma Rama Rao and Dr Vempati Chinnasatyam. Himabindu also learned Bharatanatyam from Kittappa Pillai. She was part of the ICCR tour of Eastern Europe, where she performed alongside Deepika Reddy. She performed at various dance festivals in ICRISAT and at Taramati Baradari at Hyderabad, besides at Delhi and Nainital.
