One year of letting people take various liberties with you can have you pissed off, but for this bookstore famous for allowing browsing unlimited, it's celebration time. And it's inviting the rest of town in, like it always has.
Crossword is celebrating its first anniversary today. The bookstore that has, over the last one year, brought to the Hyderabadis some fine events for the young and the old alike like evenings with Anju Poddar and Sanjeev Kapoor and a toys mela, is, on this special event, bringing a literary treat - an evening with the best in fiction and co-writer of Mission Kashmir, Vikram Chandra.
Vikram Chandra's first novel, Red Earth and Pouring Rain, won the Commonwealth prize for Best First Book. His Love and Longing in Bombay was included in the Best Books Of The Year list by New York Times Book Review, Independent (London) and Guardian (London). And the story Dharma was awarded the Discovery Prize by Paris Review, and was included in Year's Best Fantasy And Horror (St. Martin's Press, 1998).
Vikram has published in the Paris Review and the New Yorker. His work has been translated in eleven languages. Currently he teaches creative writing at the George Washington University.
This evening, Vikram will read from his unpublished novel. Please contact Vinay or Murli at 776-3239/42 for further details.
