You know Vizag as a... okay, you don't know much about Vizag. Here's art from that city - a rare occurence in town, and a good place to start.
3 artists from the port city of Visakhapatnam are exhibiting their works at the Lakshana Art Gallery in Shanti Nagar, Masab Tank. The artists, Jumana Topiwala, Jaya Narasimha Rao and Monika Rekhi, are displaying 33 paintings at the gallery.
Jumana is a Kolkata artist, settled in Vizag and living there for the last 30 years. She trained in painting from a private teacher at Kolkata, and now teaches this art to many aspiring students. She likes and paints nature and flowers, which is evident at this exhibition, particularly the coconut trees.
These trees are nicely painted and look almost like photographs. The flowers too have been nicely done, with bright colors. She has chosen watercolors on paper and oil on canvas as her media of painting. She exhibits her works every year at Vizag, and this is her first exhibition in Hyderabad.
Jaya Narasimha Rao is also a self-taught artist, who is learning painting from Jumana. She likes watercolors, but also works with oil paints on canvas. She doesn't stick to one theme and paints whatever appeals to her. This collection of her paintings is based on the divine figure, The Buddha.
The paintings are eye-catching, particularly the one that faces you when you enter the gallery. This is a painting where even the closed eyes of the Buddha seem to convey something. A total of 12 paintings of hers, both watercolor on paper and oil paintings on canvas, are on display. She has participated in five shows with Jumana in Vizag, and this is her first show in the city.
Monika Rekhi, a self-taught artist, is also learning painting from Jumana. She has 9 paintings on exhibition here. Her paintings are abstract and modern art, and she likes paintings with acrylic colors. This exhibition of hers is themed on doorways, in pastel colors - there are a few abstracts in acrylic too. Rekhi has participated with Jumana in a few art exhibitions at Vizag, and she too is exhibiting for the first time in Hyderabad.
The exhibition is on from 20th to 23rd December. For further details, please contact the gallery at 2337-8033.
