Independence day is not over yet. Not until you celebrate our freedom fighters. Lekhini Association is organising an evening in connection with Independence Day celebrations, by felicitating Vidhyadevi Omprakash, a renowned freedom fighter.
The event is scheduled for the 30th of August, at the mini hall of Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha.
Vidhyadevi Omprakash is a great freedom fighter who continued her social service even after India attained its independence. She is the daughter of another renowned freedom fighter, Dulla Venkataramanamma of Machilipatnam.
She was attracted to the freedom struggle against the Britishers at a very young age, of only eight. She used to accompany her mother to the lectures and rallies of the struggle. She stayed in Mahatma Gandhi's Ashram in Sewagram, and led Prabhatapheris (early morning rallies) to spread the struggle. There, she met Omprakash Gupta, another devoted freedom fighter, and got engaged to him.
The 88 year old lady, who had even courted several police arrests, is still raring to go. Still active and fit, give her another struggle and she won't opt out.
Lekhini Association will be felicitating this grand old lady of the Indian Freedom Struggle, after which, she would give a talk herself. She would be talking about how she got into the struggle in those days, when women were married off at a very young age, and confined to household odds and ends without formal education.
The chief guest of the evening is V Mallikarjuna Sarma, Secretary of Ravindra Bharathi and the other guests are, Dr P Sambasiva Rao (a literary writer), Lalitha Sastry (a freedom fighter, lawyer). Dr Vasa Prabhavati, Secretary of Lekhini Association, will be presiding the function. Please contact Dr Vasa Prabhavati at 2454-9178 for further details.
