Saptaswara Cultural Organization is organising the Dakshina Bharatiya Sangeeta Navaratrotsavamulu from 2nd to 10th November, at the Kala Subbarao Kala Vedika, the mini-hall of Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha. The nine-day festival has two music concerts daily, featuring special kritis of the Music Trinity (Thyagaraja, Muthuswamy Dikshitar and Syama Sastry), specially Dikshitar's Navagraha and Navavarna kritis.
Today, on the penultimate day of the festival, K Himabindu will perform a Carnatic vocal recital. Himabindu is a gold medalist in M A in music, from the Telugu University, Hyderabad, and is a B-grade artiste of the All-India Radio. She initially tutored under P Lakshmi Narasimha in Chirala, and thereafter from Akella Mallikarjuna Sarma in Hyderabad. She has performed at many temples and cultural venues in AP.
Himabindu's achievements include the 1997 Kalasagaram Tambura for the 1st prize in the Annamacharya and Purandaradasa kriti competitions conducted by Kalasagaram, the 1st prize at the Sri Thyagaraja Gana Sabha of Palakollu, the N C V Sangeeta Parishad Award in Vijayawada, the 1st prize in the All-India Music Competitions conducted by Navya Nataka Samithi (YMCA) and the 2nd prize at the National Youth Festival, Bhopal. Currently, she teaches music at her residence in Hyderabad.
The event is organised by Saptaswara, a cultural organization founded by K S R Balakrishna Sastry. He is a retired head-master who has also performed as an artiste on radio and TV, from 1952 to 2005. A disciple of Dr. M Balamurali Krishna, he has performed a number of times with him.
