The Bahumukha Nischala Pragna performed by the 9-year-old math prodigy Narayanam Nischal on Saturday at Ravindra Bharathi, astonished the audience. His talents were showcased in Saturday's exclusive invitee-only event held at the Ravindra Bharati.
A dazzling array of dignitaries graced the occasion, ranging from the Governor of the state, various ministers and bureaucrats, to popular film stars, poets and educators. They spoke a few words each, and wished the best for this exceptional boy, who is, in most ways, still just a young and innocent child.
Nischal remained rather quiet and somber through the long series of introductory speeches, as though the media's uncompromising glare had disturbed his intense concentration. Once the question and answer session began, however, the kid was in his element, and fired away his invariably correct responses.
His feats included reciting a 20-digit number backwards after hearing it only once, figuring out the day of the week given a particular date, and using the abacus to test his memory power. He also displayed a few moves of "blind" chess, where he calculated and then memorized the present and future positions of the pieces. Special mention must be made of the fact that his calculating skills were proven to be faster than that of an actual calculator.
Saturday's event, and its precocious star, will remain in the memory of the audience for a long time, who must have all wished him good luck in his continuing pursuit of knowledge and excellence.
