How'd you feel about your character being so complicated that it took six (6) different artists to portray in the same play? A scripting goddess like Akka would surely feel proud that she is more intricate than anything she's ever conceptualized, we suppose. It's such a pity she isn't around to see it.
Noted Bharatanatyam danseuse Hemamalini Arni is presenting her latest ballet production Akka, based on the life of Akka Mahadevi. Sujatha Patwari has written the ballet.
Akka was a 12th century rebel poetess of Karnataka. The ballet aims to capture the blazing intensity of Mahadevi's Vachanas (representative of her spiritualism). Mahadevi's story unfolds in six distinct stages. Vedavathi Prabhakar Rao will render the Vachanas and Ravi Kiran will score the music. Raisa Luther, Nritijuna Naidu, Tara D' Souza, Priya Makarand, Madhu Swaminathan and Megna Pradipak portray Mahadevi in the six stages.
Neha Jhujhunwala, Meghna Bhanushali, Pragnya Seth, Malvika Bishnoi, G Lavanya, Janaki Krishna, Sharmila Nair, Amrita Chandra, Prerna Ramakrishna and Anjalali Singh will portray other roles.
Renuka Prasad and Duddu Seetharamayya on the veena, Kolanka Sai Kumar on the violin, Varanasi Bhanu Prasad on the mridangam and Jayakumar Chary on the percussion will perform the nattuvangam and support the ballet. D Srinivas will handle the lighting and special effects.
Dr C Narayana Reddy will preside over the function. Please contact Hemamalini Arni at 360-8172 for further details.
