Do you know what vichitra veena is? Lalita Krishna does. Oh yes, she does.
Nada Bharathi, on the occasion of its 7th Foundation Day, is organising a veena recital by Emani Lalitha Krishna, on 13th October, at Kala Subbarao Kala Vedika, the mini-hall of Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha, Chikkadpally.
Lalita Krishna received her training in the veena from her mother Lakshmisuramma Somaajulu initially, and later from veteran violin vidwan Annavarapu Ramaswami. She is also a renowned player of the vichitra veena (or gottu vadyam as it is otherwise called), and had even altered her veena to a vichitra veena. She trained with the vichitra veena under the tutelage of the famous Ravi Kiran in Chennai.
Lalitha today has the distinction of being the only gottu vadyam player in Andhra Pradesh. She is also proficient with the mandolin. And she is an A-grade veena artiste of the All India Radio.
Lalitha will be accompanied by Kapa Srinivas Rao on the mridangam and Janardhan on the ghatam. The concert is being organised by Nada Bharathi, in memory of N C Krishnamacharyulu, a noted violin exponent and music composer.
Nada Bharathi was established on 21st October 1999, by P Srinivas Gopalan, a young mridangam, ghatam and similar instrument player. The organisation has about 500 concerts and 22 festivals to its credit, and aims to encourage upcoming artistes.
