Shrishti Art Gallery is organising Chiaroscuro, an exhibition of paintings and graphics by Arup Kumar Kuity, from 17th to 31st August. About 25 graphics and paintings are on display.
A majority of the works are etchings and aquatint, the methods of printmaking in which involve hard work in the preparation of the zinc or copper ink plate, creating outlines of the drawing on the plate and dipping in acid.
In the current exhibition, Arup has titled his works as
1. Truth In A Cage - a neighbourhood leghorn broods behind a whimsical grid of chicken wire mesh
2. Presence And Absence - a dreary, waterlogged hostel corridor is transformed into a magical colorfield of sepia, ochre and pure light, in four works
3. Parikrama - a series of six works on the popular rockband
There are also others like Let There Be Light, Life Without Obstacle, and Refraction and Dusk. Each print reveals a gemlike, self-contained world of gleaming, shimmering and blazing lights, within the velvet surface of the classic aquatint.
For paintings, Arup has used soft pastels on paper. Here, there are people of different cultures and moods, with the dark backgrounds in hues of red, violet and maroon.
Arup Kumar Kuity was born in 1976, in Kharagpur, West Bengal, and graduated with Honors, securing 1st class in BFA (Painting) from the Bengal Fine Arts College in 2003, and an MFA in Print Making with 1st class from the S N School of Fine Arts, University of Hyderabad, in 2006. He was awarded a gold medal by the Hyderabad Art Society, in 2006.
