Purbashree-Chennai, with support from the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Govt. of India, is organising the North-East Handicrafts Fair, from 24th August to 7th September, at the Institute Of Engineers Hall, Khairatabad. The exhibition has about 50 stalls and artisans from the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura displaying various handicraft items.
The centre of attraction are the cane and bamboo products that also form a majority of the exhibition. Sofas, centre tables, side tables, dewans, bookcases and decorative artifacts made from cane, and baskets, mats, vases and hand fans made from bamboo are available in plenty, at very reasonable rates.
Going around the stalls, you will find faces made with tree roots and wood, expensive panchaloha idols, leather handbags, purses, wallets and cellphone cases, wall hangings, palm leaf paintings and toys. There are also colourful handprinted readymade dresses for women and kids, including colorfully designed sleeveless tops with matching bottoms. There is also a live demonstration of making mats and baskets with bamboo by the women from the North-East.
