Hyderabad shot into international fame when it successfully hosted the world championship quarterfinal match between Viswanathan Anand of India and Gata Kamsky of the United States of America in the past. The city, which has a rich tradition of hosting international events, is now all set to host the "World Chess Cup" in grand style at the Ramoji Film City (about 40 kilometers from here) for a 14-day period.
The king of Indian chess and world no. 3 Vishwanathan Anand (who won the World Cup in China two years ago and enjoys the best Elo rating of 2755) will be the part of this tournament. Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukarine and Alexander Morozevich of Russia are also among the top players who will take part.
Prodigies like P Hari Krishna, Koneru Humpy, Dronavalli Harika and Rohit from our own state are also all here. One of the aims of the World Cup is to field as many Indian players as possible so that they can get match experience and prop up their Elo ratings. Some of the leading players who will take part in the tournament are Krishnan Sasikiran, Hari Krishna, Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Koneru Humpy, Vijayalakshmi Subbaraman, Swathi Ghate, Meenakshi, Aarthie Ramaswamy, D Harika, Bhagyashree Thipsay, Maya Chiburdanidze and Chen Zhu (China).
Though stars like Ruslan Ponomariov, Anatoly Karpov, Khalifman, Kasparov, Kramnik and a few more top players will not be the part of the tournament, it promises to serve up some rich fare.
