Mahadev is a fisherman who lives with his mother and 8-year-old daughter, Sumati. On one of his fishing forays, he catches some seashells and an oyster along with the fish. His daughter worships the shells because her grandmother told her that they would ward off evil. Sumati is overjoyed at the sight of the oyster but there is a surprise in store for her: Mahadev breaks the oyster to reveal a sparkling pink pearl. Sumati keeps it in the prayer room; it is supposed to bring the family good luck. As if to prove the point, Mahadev wins a lottery.
The goldsmith Bhabesh, the father of Sumati's friend Lalita, is a greedy man with a shady reputation. He desires to have the pearl at any cost and so he hires a goon to kidnap Sumati. Mahadev agrees to give him the pearl in exchange for his daughter, but the pink pearl brings Bhabesh nothing but bad luck: Lalita falls seriously ill and one day, Bhabesh slips from a high embankment and breaks his hip. Finally, he decides to return the pearl to Mahadev and begs for forgiveness.
Mahadev decides to throw the pearl back into the sea to avoid further problems. This causes great anguish to Sumati. But then, a miracle occurs...
