The Hyderabad Film Club is screening the film, The Lives Of Others (Das Leben der Anderen), at the Sarathi Studios in Ameerpet, on 13th December. Directed by Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck, the film stars Ulrich Muhe, Martina Gedeck, Sebastian Koch and Ulrich Tukur.
'The Lives of Others' is a political thriller and human drama. The film opens in East Berlin, in 1984, with 'Stasi' Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Muehe), code name 'HGW XX/7' demonstrating his interrogation technique to a class of aspiring 'Stasi' policemen, using an actual video of his own interrogation of a suspect. Georg Dreyman, a successful dramatist, and his companion Christa-Maria Sieland, a popular actress, are big intellectual stars in the socialist state, although they aren't always loyal to the party. When the Minister of Culture starts becoming interested in Christa, the secret service agent Wiesler is instructed to observe and sound out the couple, but their life fascinates him more and more.
The film won several awards, including the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science in the Best Foreign Film in 2006, Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor at the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA), Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globe 2006, and Best Foreign Language Film by the Toronto Film Critics Association in 2007.
