Hosts Hyderabad play Punjab in the Elite Group A Ranji Trophy Cricket Match from 12th to 15th December, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. Hyderabad are 5th in the group, with 10 points, and Punjab are placed in the 7th, with 7 points. With just 2 matches left for both the teams, Punjab are virtually out of contention for the semifinals, but the match is critical for the hosts and they need to go for an outright win.
Arjun Yadav will captain the side in the absence of V V S Laxman who's on national duty. The morale of the team is low due to the heavy loss in the hands of Mumbai in their previous encounter. The younger batsmen, such as Ravi Teja, Anoop Pai and T Suman, have been consistent with the bat, but it is the bowlers, such as Shoaib Ahmed, M P Arjun and Ashwin Yadav, who haven't been among the wickets. The absence of V V S Laxman and spinner Pragyan Ojha add to their woes.
Punjab, on the other hand, is captained by the experienced Pankaj Dharmani. Gagandeep Singh, Manpreet Gony and Ravneet Ricky are the other experienced lot of the team. Punjab has lost 2 matches against Gujarat and Orissa, won against Rajasthan and drew 2 matches against Delhi and Saurashtra. The team is 7th out of 8 teams in the group.
Entry is free. Please contact the Hyderabad Cricket Association, at 2790-5676 for further details.
