To commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations between India and Sri Lanka, the Hyderabad Film Club, in collaboration with the High Commission for Sri Lanka, New Delhi, is presenting 60 Years Of Sri Lankan Cinema, from 14th to 22nd June, at the Sarathi Studios Preview Theatre, Ameerpet. 9 award winning Sri Lankan films will be screened during the 9-day festival.
As part of the festival, Shadows Of White (Sudu Sevaneli) will be screened on the penultimate day today. The film is directed by Prof. Sunil Ariyaratne, and has Roshan Pilapitiya, Vasanthi Chaturani, Linton Semage, Iranganee Serasinghe, Kanchana Mendis, Tharaka Hettiarachi, Hemasiri Liyanage and G R Perera playing the lead roles.
Sudu Banda, one among many of those who left their priesthood to wage war against the colonial rulers, prepares himself to return to his native village in the hills. He reaches his village to find his family in disrepair. His mother has lost her mind, and his elder brother (Heen Banda) is languishing in jail. Heen Banda's wife Podi Menika - a mother with two children - is a pretty woman. Now Sudu becomes the bread earner of the entire family, and he and Menika start living together, because polygamy, where brothers of the same family maintain one wife, is accepted among the Kandyan (Hill Country) communities.
In honour of Queen Victoria's birthday, a number of prisoners are released on a Royal Pardon, and Heen Banda is among them. On his return his happy home life shatters. Heen Banda becomes an outsider in his own house...
