The Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Festival is back this year, and is being organized from 31st Oct to 7th Nov. The festival is conducted by the Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation, which was established by Mohammed Ali Baig in memory of his father Qadir Ali Baig, a doyen of Hindustani theatre.
The foundation was established in an attempt to revive the Indian theatre scene. On board are danseuse Vani Ganapathy, actresses Rohini Hattangadi, Suhasini Maniratnam and Urmila Matondkar, lyricist Javed Akhtar and director M S Sathyu.
The foundation not only stages plays every month, but also imparts to young talent, basic training in all aspects of theatre. Begum Razia Qadir Ali Baig, wife of Qadir Ali, is the Chairperson of the foundation, Sathyu is the National Director, and Mohammad Ali is the President.
On 4th Nov '08, as part of the festival, the play Question Mark will be staged at Ravindra Bharathi at 7:30pm. Question Mark is written by Ismail Choonara, directed by Azhar Aalam, and features Uma Jhunjhuwala & the Little Thespian Theatre Group.
The Little Thespian Group is based in Kolkata, and functions under Uma Jhunjhuwala. Question Mark's Urdu adaptation was staged by Little Thespian in Kolkata, and the play has also travelled to different parts of the country. Little Thespian is now all set to stage Question Mark at the Indo-Pak Maas Theatre Festival 2008, to be held in Lahore.
Ismail Choonara was born in South Africa, of Indian parents hailing from Gujarat, and lives in England. He is a poet, painter, chemist, and teacher of mathematics and science, and writing remains his first love. Over the years his short stories, poems and other pieces have appeared in books and journals in South Africa, UK, USA, India and Pakistan. His radio plays have been broadcast on the World Service for the BBC, and on the German Radio network.
The event is being presented by Karvy, and APTDC and ICCR are associate sponsors. The event is supported by SBH & SBI, the official host is HICC, and Deccan Chronicle is the media associate.
