Uttarayan, a socio-cultural association of Hyderabad, is organising Natya Utsav, a two-day Bengali theatre festival, on 20th & 21st August, at the Ravindra Bharathi auditorium. Three plays - Missed Call, Amake Dekhun and Meghnath Badh Kabya will be presented by the Naye Natua Theatre Group from Kolkata during the festival.
Michael Madhusudan Datta's epic Meghnath Badh Kabya will be performed on the last day, at 7pm. The direction, music and performance of this solo act is all by Gautam Halder.
This presentation has won awards and travelled all over India and abroad. It has also been featured in several national theatre festivals.
The production has been choreographed as one epic dance, and the entire text is musically tuned in a classical mould. Gautam Halder performs this alone with live Indian music on stage. It is like a narrative temple dance, evoking the traditions from the past, and, yet, is presented with modern sensibility.
Uttarayan is a 3 decade old social club formed by a group of Bengalis residing in and around SR Nagar. It has grown over the years, organizing events and entertainment programs during Kali Puja and Diwali celebrations, to attract both Bengalis and non-Bengalis. Currently, Uttarayan has over 120 members from diverse professions.
To recognize talents among members and their families, "Outstanding Achievement Awards" have been introduced since the year 2007. The awards are meant to encourage members and their families to contribute articles, poems, short-stories etc., for publication in the souvenir that is published every year during Kali Puja celebrations.
