Passage Rites, an exhibition of paintings and sculpture by 5 artists, is on at the ICONART Gallery, from 27th February to 12th March. The participating artists are Jayshree Basak, Nabanita Datta Guha, Santanu Chakraborty, Somaditya Datta and Sujay Datta.
Animals bear special significance as they engage the mind, both as a reminder of popular culture and as religious motifs - Nabanita Datta Guha's paintings attempt to justify their role and space. Jayshree Basak's works, basically acrylic paintings on paper, are based on nature and its beauty. Somaditya Datta's works revolve around visuals that take elements from the colonial past, particularly the motifs used as embellishments in the colonial architecture of Kolkata.
Santanu Chakraborty is a print-maker by practice, trained in the traditional various mediums of printmaking. His works are the visual output of inner feelings of his mind developing in a continuous process of self-analysis. He captures the series of objective and subjective facts and happenings surrounding him, including family, society, and artificial interventions. As for Sujay, his paintings present some realistic figures from nature - he chose his subjects from everyday figures, and his paintings have a sculpture-like quality.
