Midnapore is Sunirmal Maiti's Malgudi. And what Malgudi's immortaliser did with words, Maiti divides by 1000 to do with just pictures. Midnapore, however, is very real, and so, thus, is the immortality.
An exhibition of paintings by Sunirmal Maiti is being hosted by Lakshana Art Gallery from 23rd February to 1st March. The paintings on display have been done on the theme of The Boats, with mixed media on paper, and some etchings and wood intaglio. They reflect the mind of the artist - his dream and his experiences from his childhood days in the village of Midnapore, with the river, the streams and those boats.
Sunirmal Maiti was born in 1958, in Midnapore, West Bengal. Basically a science graduate, he obtained a BFA from Visva Bharati, Shantiniketan, with first class & rank in 1982. He also studied Post Graduation in Graphics-Print making from M S University of Baroda, and Advertising & Marketing Management from Birla Institute in 1993.
He worked for Cadila Laboratories at Ahmedabad till 1986, and as an Art Director in Spur Advertising and Marketing, Ahmedabad, till 1992. He has participated in various exhibitions, at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata; the Birla Academy Annual Exhibitions; and the Lalit Kala exhibitions at Rabindra Bharati, Gulbarga, Baroda and Ahmedabad. He was one of the members of group shows in the Mumbai Art Gallery, the Academy of Fine Arts, and the Taj Bengal.
He is a recipient of awards like the Gujarat State Lalit Kala, the Best Graphics Award, the University Merit Scholarships from Visva Bharati, and the Illustrator's Award by the Art Forum of Ahmedabad.
